An animagus is a wizard or witch, who elects (who does it at will) to turn into an animal.

To become an animagus you must be very advanced in transfiguration, it takes a powerful witch or wizard to become one.

If training to become an animagus things can go terribly wrong so it is suggested you get trained by someone who is excellent at transfiguration, or someone who is already an animagus.

If you are an animagus you must register yourself at the Ministry Of Magic for saftey reasons. The reason you must register is because if animal tracks are found at the scene of a crime they can see if it was an animagus who did it or what it was.
