If a witch or wizard wishes to avoid death, the closest thing to immortality which is nearly impossible, is somthing called Horcruxes..

Horcruxes are things made only by powerful witches or wizards who are familar with the dark arts. Voldemort is the only known person to ever create Horcruxes he made six of them.

Now for the witch or wizard that can create a horcrux (or as many as they want) they will be able to split their soul in half, as many times as they want. One of the things that must be provided is a killing by the person who wants to make one.

Just because they split their soul in half, does not mean they are immortal..they might hide it in the best place but it is almost gurenteed that someone is bound to come across it. It can be anything in the world. For instance Voldemort made one of the horcruxes a ring, the ring of his fathers.. and it was destroyed by Dumbledore. Since Dumbledore destroyed it he basicly killed that part of his soul making it to where he can not use that to come back to life again.

For those who make one, they generaly hide it behind many obsticles so only them who know how to get past the obsticles can access it.

Known Horcruxes

Salazar Slytherins Locket
The locket was hidden in a cave where he used to torture people who lived in the same orphanage as him.

Marvolo Gaunts Ring
This ring was the ring of his fathers, found in the shack at his house dumbledore destroyed it leaving his hand burnt, or just blackened.

Tom Riddles Diary
The diary was slipped into Ginny Weasleys cauldron in Harrys second year when they were at Flourish and Blotts, by a deatheater of Voldemorts named Lucius Malfoy. This was destroyed by Harry when they were in the Chamber Of Secrets.

Helga Hufflepuff's Cup
The Cup was once owned by a distant descendant of Hufflepuff but Tom Riddle stole it from her and killed her. He used her death to turn it into a Horcrux. The Cup was later destroyed by Ron and Hermionie with one of the Basilisks fangs.

Rowena Ravencalaw's Diadem
The Diadem was originally owned by Rowena but her daughter stole it. Rowena sent the Bloody Baron after Helena, but before the Baron got to her she hid the Diadem in the woods. Later in life Tom Riddle tricked Helena's ghost into telling the location of the Diadem. Then Tom Riddle found it and killed a local person as a sacrifice to turn it into a Horcrux. Tom Riddle then came back to the school to ask Dumbledore about a teaching position and while there hid it in the Room of Requirements. The horcrux was eventually destroyed by Crabbe on accident.

Harry Potter
The night that Voldemort first tried to kill Harry as a baby his killing curse backfired. As a result part of Voldemorts soul was attatched to Harry himself making him a horcrux. This is why Harry can see into Voldemorts mind and also how he could speak Parseltongue. Now this next part gets kind of confusing if you haven't read the book. Harry knew that he had to sacrifice himself to get rid of the Horcrux that he was. Since Harry was willing to sacrifice him and had many protections around him once Voldemort used the killing curse on him he killed the Horcrux. Only the Horcrux and not Harry himself, now the connection was broke between the two of them.

Nagini
Nagini was made into a Horcrux with the killing of Bertha Jorkins. Voldemort often sent Nagini out to do various tasks and didn't worry to much about this Horcrux. However when he discovered that almost all of his Horcruxes were destroyed he used a charm to keep Nagini safe. When he thought he killed Harry Potter he took the charm Nagini. Nagini was killed shortly after the charm was taken off by Neville Longbottom and the Sword of Godric Gryffindor.
