![]() Issue #1 Horcruxes Be Warned: IF you have yet to finish HBP, please do not read this issue! A Horcrux is a magical object created by the use of Dark Arts. The primary purpose of the Horcrux is for the witch/wizard to avoid death. To do so, they place a part of their soul within an object the Horcrux that is usually hidden away in a safe location. A quick example would be: Ted makes a pen into a Horcrux. He then hides the pen where no one will find it. As long as the pen is undamaged, Ted will live. Ted will become immune to death while it exists. The destruction of the creator's body does not result in death, but leaves the creator in a state of half-life "lesser than the meanest ghost". Following further into our example, Ted is killed. However, Ted remains in alive, but barely, because of his pen (the Horcrux). Lord Voldemort was left in the same "half life", after he attempted to use the Killing Curse on Harry Potter. Destruction of the physical Horcrux removes the protection it provides, and the Witch or Wizard again becomes vulnerable to death through physical destruction. Meaning, if Ted's pen is crushed, their goes his Horcrux and he now can be killed. Creating a Horcrux The creation of a Horcrux is neither simple nor passive. The soul of the creator must be torn into at least two pieces to provide a portion of the soul to conceal within the object. To "rip" a soul, the creator must commit murder, and then they cast a spell to infuse one part of the soul into the intended Horcrux (Ted's pen). There is no apparent limitation on the nature of items that can be made into a Horcrux. Its creator would likely choose a durable object, because its destruction removes the protection from death that it provides to its creator. Lord Voldemort likely chose objects of significant sentimental or historical value. Known Horcruxes The three items that are about to be presented have been confirmed Horcurxes used by Lord Voldemort. The first of the three, is Lord Voldemort's father's (Marvolo Gaunt) ring. Voldemort's's childhood and life suggest that he took the ring when he murdered his father and then wore the ring at Hogwarts. Before the start of Harry's Dumbledore destoryed the ring, but suffered severe hand burns due to a curse place upon the ring. The next would be Tom Riddle's Diary. The diary Horcrux was destroyed by Harry when he rescued Ginny. He didn't know of Horcurxes, but he did notice the connection with the diary and Tom Riddle. The last of the known Horcruxes is Slytherin's Locket. Harry and Dumbledore went on a quest to recover the locket Horcrux, but they failed as it had been replaced by a fake one, along with a note left by an unidentified person with the initials "R.A.B.", who planned to destroy the original. It is uncertain if the orginal locket Horcrux was successfully destroyed. Quesions? Comments? Send an Owl to the Weadmaster! Next Issue: Remus Lupin: The Truth Behind the Fur |
